Athletic Training

COLLEGE OF MARIN SPORTS MEDICINE

WHO ARE ATHLETIC TRAINERS?

IN THE PAST:

Athletic Training has roots dating back to ancient Greece where athletics was an important part of Greek culture and Olympics. Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine,” and his student Claudius Galen often advised their patients to exercise in the gymnasia as a means of recovering from their ills.

PRESENT DAY:

Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations.  As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) has helped to unify Certified Athletic Trainers across the country by setting a standard for professionalism, education, certification, research and practice settings. An athletic trainer does not become certified until s/he also passes a national certification examination. Athletic trainers must also maintain CPR and AED certifications.

OUR MISSION:

The mission of the College of Marin Sports Medicine staff is to prevent injuries, recognize when one occurs and evaluate, treat and recondition all of our student-athletes while under the supervision of a physician, so that they may return to their sport(s) quickly and safely as possible.
