College of Sequoias Edges COM Baseball In Series Opener 6-5

The first game of the Mariners' road trip did not go as planned as the hosts College of Sequoias scored a pair of runs late to grab a 6-5 win. The first of a three game series between the two teams was a back and forth affair as Marin fell behind, took the lead and then lost the lead late.

Sequoias opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs. With runners on the corners and one out, a potential double play ball was mishandled allowing the first run to score, followed by a two out single that yielded the second run.

The home team held a 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning where the Mariners loaded the bases with two outs. Jakob Davidson laced a double, clearing the bases and giving Marin a 3-2 lead. Marin added two more runs in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Marcus Chiu, compounded by an error that allowed a second run to come around and push the Mariners advantage to 5-2.

Sequoias responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Sequoias put runners on second and third with no outs before an RBI ground out and a sac fly cut the Marin advantage to just 5-4.

Marin starter Chase Gardner lasted five innings and allowed four runs, but just two earned. He struck out one and walked two while allowing four hits. Chris Allen started the seventh inning and retired the side in order before running into trouble in the top of the eighth.

A walk and a double put Sequoias runners at second and third before an RBI ground out tied the game at five runs each. Bret Boywer replaced Allen and yielded an RBI single to give Sequoias the one run lead. Bowyer worked his way out of the inning but it gave Marin just three outs to work with. Marin was retired in order in the top of the ninth as Sequoias grabbed the victory.

Mariners' Jakob Davidson had a pair of hits and three RBI while Jake Munoz and Christian Merriwether each scored twice.

Marin takes on Sequoias again on Saturday for a double header with the first pitch of the first game scheduled for 10:30AM.
