Baseball Opens Series With A 6-2 Victory over Laney College

College of Marin baseball fended off a late charge by conference rivals Laney College and grabbed a 6-2 victory in the opener of the three game series. Holding a 6-0 lead, Marin allowed pair of runs to Laney in the ninth but still tasted victory. Chris Allen started for the Mariners and threw seven scoreless innings. Adam Hussain had a pair of hits and three RBIs in the winning effort.

The starting pitchers traded zeroes until the top of the third when Marin's Dominic Burke walked to lead off the top half of the inning. He moved to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a ground out by Marcus Chiu. Adam Hussain strode to the plate a delivered a single to score Burke and give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

College of Marin added their second in the top of the fifth as Burke led off and reached on an error by the Laney shortstop. Chiu walked and Burke reached third on an error by the catcher. Hussain followed with a chopper that retired Chiu, but Burke scored to push the lead to 2-0.

Laney's bats remained silent for much of the afternoon courtesy of an excellent performance by Chris Allen. The Mariners' starter allowed just five hits and single walk while striking out six opposing hitters. Bret Boywer took over for Allen in the eighth inning and retired the side in order.

In the visiting half of the ninth inning Marin got to work on a few insurance runs. Alex Davis led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, he reached third on a groundout with two outs before Burke walked to put runners at the corners. Chiu followed with a single to plate Davis and Hussain followed with a single of his own to score Burke. Jakob Davidson followed with a two run double to increase the lead to six runs at 6-0.

In the bottom half of the ninth Laney put runners on second and third with one away against Bowyer. A fielder's choice scored one and a two out single scored a second run, but that was all she wrote as Bowyer settled down to retire the final batter of the game.

For his efforts Allen recorded his second win of the season, while Bowyer earned his fourth save. Hussain had two hits and three RBIs while Marcus Chiu had a hit a run, an RBI and drew three walks.

The win pushes the Mariners conference record to 10-3 in conference, a game head of both Laney and Los Medanos.
