COM Baseball’s Bowyer and Chiu Sign D1 Letters Of Intent

On Thursday, a pair of Mariners made their mark on their future endeavors. Baseball's Brett Bowyer and Marcus Chiu signed their letters of intent, Bowyer with University of the Pacific and Chiu with University of Nevada Reno. The pair signed their letters in front of coaches, friends and teammates.

Bowyer is Redshirt Sophomore this season after missing most of last year with an injury. In his career he is 1-1 with a save in 22 innings pits with 17 strikeouts. Head Baseball Coach Steve Berringer had a glowing report on Bowyer.

Bret did not choose College of Marin right out of high school but instead took an opportunity at a four year university. Fortunately for us Bret realized his first college choice was just not right for him. He returned home and joined the Mariners family in the spring of 2015. From the first day Bret stepped on campus we knew we had something special. Not only was it his 6'3 200lb frame that got your attention but it was the way he carried himself on the field. Bret has been very dedicated to the pitching craft and has fined tuned his skills to throw a fast ball in the high 80's to low 90's with movement off the charts."

Marcus Chiu will begin his Sophomore year this Spring after a Freshman campaign where he hit .311 with three home runs, 24 RBI and 35 runs scored in 35 games. Berringer was equally pleased with Chiu's past and future accomplishments.

"Marcus joined the Mariners last fall and has worked hard to demonstrate to Professional Scouts and College coaches that he is someone to pay attention to… Marcus has brought out almost every Major League Baseball team to scout him over the past year. Marcus is a leader on the field and has set the bar in the weight room as he continues to push himself daily to get better."

The pairing of Bowyer and Chiu should give the Mariners great hope of a Bay Valley Conference Championship in the 2017 season.
