Sixteen Mariners Named to Academic All-State Teams

Despite the pandemic and transition to online only education in the spring, the Mariners did not falter in their academic studies. Eight Mariners’ intercollegiate teams combined to place sixteen different student-athletes on the Academic All-State Teams.

To qualify for the Academic All-State Teams, a student-athlete needed a 3.5 GPA and a minimum of 24 units passed since their first season of competition. College of Marin student-athletes take part in a wide variety of activities to support their academic performance, including a specialized student-athlete success class, Kinesiology 131. Part of the student-athlete experience at College of Marin also includes participation in study hall, attending professors’ office hours and regular progress reports. Several student-athletes are also actively engaged in other College of Marin learning communities including MAPS, Puente and Umoja.

The Indoor Volleyball Team put libero Magnolia Johnson and outside hitter Sasha Urban on the Academic All-State Teams. The sophomore athletes each earned a place on another All-State Team. Urban for the Swim & Dive Team while Johnson made it on the Beach Volleyball All-State Team. Fellow sophomore Erika Eide joined Johnson on the Beach Academic Team.

The Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams combined to put five players on the Academic All-State Teams. Sophomore defender Wendy Fullam, freshman midfielder Julia Heller and first year forward Juliana Oliveira Cortinas qualified for the women’s team while freshman midfielders Daniil Menshikov and Breiner Rodas Vasques were named to the men’s team.

The Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams each placed two team members on their respective All-State Teams. Freshman guard/forward Julian Bryant and freshman guard Ian Cerruti each qualified for the Men’s Team, while the freshmen backcourt of Sophia Jacob and Vanessa Torres did so for their respective team.

Last but not least was the Baseball Team, which qualified four members to the Academic All-State Team. The quartet of sophomores included Outfielder Jacob Berg, Pitcher Owen Hamilton, Outfielder Oscar Urbina and Catcher Isaac Woldt.

Academic All-State is just the first set of academic awards this fall. Several of the aforementioned athletes are also in the running for the prestigious Scholar Athlete Award, won by Mariner Alumni Will Zurcher just a few years ago.
