Mariners Upend Butte College 80-66 To Capture Foothill Tournament Title

The College of Marin Men's Basketball Team returned with force from a month long layoff. After storming through the first two rounds of the Foothill Tournament, the Mariners used a 13-0 second half run to blow open the championship game against Butte College for an 80-66 tournament title.

The first half was a taught affair, but Marin took a 33-31 halftime lead courtesy of a buzzer beating half-court shot.  After holding a 36-34 early second half advantage, Marin reeled off 13 consecutive points, pushing the advantage to 15. The Mariners cruised the rest of the way to the 80-66 final score.

Trevelin Queen paced Marin with 25 points and 12 rebounds while his teammate Nylek Cobb posted 24 points, 12 boards and three blocks in the victorious effort. The Mariners shot 53.8% from the floor while holding Butte College to just 34.3% on field goal tries. Butte's leading scorer was Darae Elliott who had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Head Coach Scott Thom picked up his first wins as a collegiate coach and was pleased with his team's performance over the weekend. "Proud of how our guys battled the whole weekend and stayed focused on finishing each game out."

Marin reached the title game by dispatching local rival Santa Rosa Junior College 88-83 in the opening game. Queen again led Marin with 28 points, Cobb, had 22 points while Derek Morgan had a double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The semifinal game against Feather River saw Marin break triple digits for the first time in since the 2014-2015 season. All five Marin starters had eight or more points, led again by Queen with 29 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals. Cobb had 27 points and 9 rebounds while JT Robinson had 12 points and eight assists. The team shot 52.1% from the floor and 19-41 from three point range.

Queen averaged 27.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in the three tournament games. Cobb was not far behind, averaging 24.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Marin travels to Modesto College to face the host team of the Modesto Tournament on Thursday, December 15 at 8:00PM.
