COM Men’s Soccer Falls to Contra Costa 5-1

The Mariners ventured to Contra Costa College on Tuesday and were met with a rude welcoming by the Comets. The home team scored twice in the first ten minutes and never looked back as Contra Costa defeated College of Marin by a score of 5-1.

In the sixth minute Anthony Maytum took a pass from Raul Garcia and beat Mariners keeper Colin Sneddon for the opening goal. Just four minutes late Eduardo De Loa Jr intercepted a pass and carried the ball into the box where he finished for a 2-0 Contra Costa lead.

While the Mariners defense did their best, the Contra Costa attack was too potent to contain. De Loa Jr assisted on the third goal of the day, in the 25th minute as he found Addison Escobar for the score. Marin fended off the attack for the remainder of the half and trailed 3-0 after 45 minutes of play.

It did not improve for Marin in the second half as De Loa Jr. scored his second unassisted goal of the game in the 55th minute for a 4-0 lead. COM did not go quietly as Joseph Ndungu found the back of the net for the Mariners in 64th minute. He took a pass from Alejandro Gonzalez Flores and scored to cut the lead to 4-1. The Comets responded and less than a minute later Jordan Flechero scored off a pass from Maytum to rebuild the 4 goal advantage.

Marin managed to keep a clean sheet the rest of the way, but they were unable to make a comeback and fell by the score of 5-1.

"We ran into a very well coached and talented Contra Costa team today. They showed us a different level of play and something we should strive to be moving forward. We will grow and learn from this loss today and get better from it," said Coach Michael Crivello on the match.

The Mariners look to rebound with a road date at Napa Valley College on Friday, October 6th at 4pm.
