Women’s Basketball Nabs First Conference Win Over Mendocino 66-36

The Mariners used a balance attack to overwhelm Bay Valley Conference foe Mendocino College on Tuesday night. All seven College of Marin players scored and grabbed at least two rebounds while all five starters scored in double digits in route to a 66-36 win over the Eagles.

COM jumped out to a quick 14-5 lead on the strength of several second chance points and a bank shot three pointer from the hands of Jaychelle Price. The team took an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and improved upon that in the second by notching another 18 points. The defense held strong, limiting Mendocino College to just 18 total first half points.

The Mariners started the second half on a big run pushing their lead to 24 at one juncture. Though Mendocino was able to rally a bit, the Mariners used a big fourth quarter to completely put the game away at 66-36. It matched the team's highest scoring output of the season, and it was their best defense effort as well.

The Mariners nabbed a season high 15 steals, led by Monica Vasquez's six. She also scored twelve points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jaychelle Price did everything for the Mariners scoring 17 points and coming one assist short of a triple double as she dished out nine to go with 11 rebounds.  Darrian Cross also came very close to a triple double as she had 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as well as snatching three steals. Molly Carmody scored 11 points with four rebounds and four steals and Ureka Abbushi had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

For Assistant Coach Jared Feldman "It was great to get that first conference win, and having everyone contribute was fantastic. We have five players that can get us double digits on any given night and to have that from all of them is exactly what we needed. I hope this gives us the confidence to have continued success for the rest of the season."

The Mariners season continues on Wednesday, January 20th at Yuba College.
