College of Marin Women’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short In 63-61 Loss To Yuba College

The Mariners have not played many games this year that went down to the wire, however Friday's game against Yuba College did just that. College of Marin had three chances to take the lead, as they trailed Yuba College 62-61 with under 15 seconds remaining.

Ureka Abbushi missed an open corner three before fouling out on a steal attempt. Leading Yuba scorer Kylie Daniels split free throws to take a two point lead with 12 seconds left on the clock. Molly Carmody had a runner in the paint tick off the iron. Kailey Walker grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked outside to Darrian Cross, but her three pointer went long as time expired.

The game began with Yuba taking an early 11-4 on the strength of three made three pointers before the Mariners offense awoke to rattle off a 15-7 run. The key sequence was a block by Abbushi who deflected a baseline shot to Cross. Cross pushed the ball across half court before finding Abbushi for a corner three to bring the game within four. Jaychelle Price made a three point play to give the Mariners a 19-18 lead.

The offense hit a lull to start the second quarter as the Mariners managed just three points in the first seven minutes of the period to trail by six 28-22.  Price sparked the offense with a pair of layups and free throws to bring College of Marin within three at the half as they trailed Yuba 31-28.

Molly Carmody started off the third quarter with a steal and layup to bring the game within a single point. Yuba continued to score in a multitude of ways and took a 47-41 lead at the end of the quarter. The Mariners stormed out of the gate to start the fourth as Carmody scored seven straight for College of Marin to bring the game within three at 51-48. Cross made a layup, Abbushi a pair of free throws and Price a three pointer to put the Mariners up 55-51 with 5:30 remaining in the game. Yuba tied the game at 60 before Cross gave the Mariners a 61-60 lead after splitting free throws. Yuba scored a layup with 30 seconds remaining to give Yuba a 62-61 advantage before the Mariners' three game winning shot opportunities.

Jaychelle Price was the leading scorer for the College of Marin with 23 points on 7-19 shooting. She made 2-7 from the three point arc and 7-11 from the line. Price added nine rebounds and five assists. Molly Carmody was electric in the second half scoring 15 of her 19 points after intermission with 11 in the fourth quarter. Abbushi had nine points, nine rebounds and four steals while Cross pulled down 11 boards.

Assistant Coach Jared Feldman has pleased with his team's effort, "It was great to see us compete for 40 minutes. We came so close I really thought Darrian's [Cross] three was going to go down. It would have been great to win, but it was a fun game for everyone to be a part of,"

The Mariners final home game is Wednesday against Mendocino College at 5:30PM.
