Games between the College of Marin and Gavilan College are always tight affairs. The Mariners won the first meeting in 2012 by a single point and dropped the same contest last year by the same margin. The two teams met Saturday with the game decided by a much larger amount, two points. Gavilan came out on top, but the Mariners had the chance to win.

With 13 seconds left, the Mariners had the ball trailing 59-58. Sophomore Jaychelle Price took the ball on the right wing and attacked middle. Kailey Walker screened Price’s defender to open up the lane, but was called for a moving screen before the play could commence. The Mariners were forced to foul, putting Gavilian’s Eunice Kim at the line. Despite missing both free throws, the Mariners could not secure the rebound. Gavilan made one of their final two free throws to win 60-58.

College of Marin fell behind in the first half as Gavilan led 17-11 after the first quarter and 32-28 at the half. Gavilan jumped out to a double digit lead in the third quarter before the Mariners rallied to tie it up. With a score of 47-44 as the fourth quarter began, the Mariners continued to battle taking a lead in the final minute behind a three pointer by Darrian Cross. Gavilan fought back with a pair of three throws before Jaychelle Price hit a floater to give the Mariners a 58-57 lead before a wing jumper gave Gavilan the lead for good with less than thirty seconds left. With the ball the Mariners were unable to get the go ahead bucket.

Price led the way for the Mariners with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Cross chipped in 17 points and 13 rebounds and made four three point buckets. Kailey Walker grabbed 14 rebounds and Ureka Abbushi had 11 rebounds and three steals.
