Women’s Basketball Falls In Season Opener To Hartnell College 65-45

The College of Marin Women’s Basketball team may be lacking in number, but not in effort. In their first game under the new four quarter system, the Mariners jumped out to an early lead but ran out of energy as the game got out of control late as Hartnell College pulled away to win 65-45.

The game got off to a fast start taking a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, however their shooting went cold as Hartnell took a 31-25 halftime lead after a midrange buzzer beater. The Mariners did their best to fight back in the third quarter but pinpoint shooting put the Mariners down big heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mariners began the game with only five dressed players with one player unavailable due to injury and one competing in a volleyball match. Mariners point guard Jaychelle Price fouled out with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the team was forced to play with four until Kailey Walker arrived and allowed the team to finish the game with five players. Although Hartnell was victorious 65-45 there were several bright spots in the opening game of the 2015-2016 season.

Freshmen and Sir Francis Drake High graduates Molly Carmody and Ureka Abbushi made invaluable contributions in their colligate debuts. Abbushi had a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds playing as an undersized post player. Carmody spent much of the game at point guard and scored eight points with three rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Darrian Cross had 12 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four steals.

The Mariners could not buy a jumper as Cross’ three pointer as time expired was the lone triple made in 18 tries. The team did an excellent job of being aggressive as they drew 27 fouls and took 42 shots from the free throw line.

The Mariners face Gavilan College in Kentfield on November 7th at 3PM.
