Women’s Basketball Falls At Skyline 69-29

Slow starts have hurt the Mariners of late. It took almost five minutes for the COM team to score their first points of the game. While it a difficult shooting day for Marin, the Skyline Trojans nailed the majority of their early shots. The lack of offense spiraled for COM as Skyline took a large lead at the end of the first half that they would not relinquish. Despite some fight, Skyline won the game 69-29.

Skyline scored the first nine points of the game before Ureka Abbushi put back a Darrian Cross miss for to make the score 9-2. Monica Vasquez hit a jumper with a minute remaining in the first quarter for the Mariners second bucket of the game. Skyline led 18-4 at the end of the first.

The Mariners offense picked up a bit in the second as Cross made a layup and a three pointer and Kim Maxwell knocked down a pullup jumper to give the Mariners 11 points at the half. Unfortunately Skyline hit shot after shot to go into the break with a 43-11 lead. After the break, the Mariners managed six points in the third, Jaychelle Price had five points with a free throw and a pair of layups while Cross made a free throw. At the end of third Skyline held a 56-17 lead.

The offense picked up a bit in the fourth quarter with Molly Carmody registering eight points on a pair of jumpers and four free throws made. Abbushi chipped in four points with a pair of midrange jumpers. However, the defense was not able to keep pace as Skyline pulled out the 40 point victory.

For Assistant Coach Jared Feldman "The game was typical of how we've played of late, great looks on offense that aren't falling, while the other team hits a majority of their shots. Our transition defense needs work as Skyline seemed to drive to the basket with ease on the break. We've got a couple weeks to get things together before our next games."

Carmody led the Mariners with eight points, Cross had six points, 13 rebounds and four assists and Abbushi had six points, eight rebounds and two steals.

The Mariners travel to Lemoore to compete in the West Hills Tournament on December 18th. They will open up against Cerritos College at 3PM.
