College of Marin Women’s Basketball Opens Season With 60-41 Road Loss

Marin Women's Basketball traveled to Gilroy to face Gavilan College in their season opener on Tuesday evening. The first half went well with both teams battling back and forth, however the second half was all Gavilan as Marin was unable to keep up and fell 60-41.

Marin jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead courtesy of a pair of baskets from Ureka Abbushi and Daniella Cerruti. A Gavilan timeout jumpstarted the opposition to take control and lead at the end of the first quarter 13-8. Marin battled back with help from freshman forwards Amari Allison and Aezioni Fuller as they cleaned up in the paint to tie the game at 18. Gavilan responded with a 6-0 run to take a 24-18 advantage before Marin again responded to cut the lead to 24-23. Gavilan scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 28-23 lead into halftime.

The second half was all Gavilan as conditioning began to show for College of Marin. Gavilan pounced on every loose ball and scored a majority of their third quarter points off offensive rebounds. They outscored Marin 20-7 to take a 48-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Marin responded well to open the fourth as Allison did all she could to keep her team afloat. Despite her efforts, it was not enough as College of Marin fell by the final score of 60-41.

Allison was the leading scorer for Marin with 15 points, Cerruti added 11 of her own after going to the free throw line eight times.

The Mariners face Las Positas College at the Hawks Classic on Thursday, November 10th.
