COM Women’s Basketball Can’t Keep Pace With Laney

The first game of 2017 did not go as planned for College of Marin Women's Basketball. The visitors from Laney College jumped out to a nearly lead which grew with every quarter. Marin's offense was stymied by the athleticism of Laney who nearly reached triple digits with a 92-31 final score.

Laney were relentless from the opening tip, attacking the paint on every possession, as Marin had difficulty denying second and third chance points. Laney grew a 22-5 first quarter advantage to 46-17 at half time. The third quarter was all Laney again as they scored 28 points while Marin managed just six. The fourth quarter was slightly closer as Laney scored 18 to Marin's eight as the final tally reached 92-31.

Marin did get solid contributions from a number of players. Despite fighting a lower body injury, sophomore Ureka Abbushi had eight points and six rebounds to lead Marin in both categories. She also knocked down both of the Mariners' three pointers in the game. Tori Buckley had an energetic game, filling up all aspects of the score sheet.  She had five points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks on the evening.

Courtenay Brown led the way for Laney with 24 points and five steals, her teammate Chacitty Cunningham had 23 points and three steals of her own.

Marin has only a single day of rest before hosting Los Medanos College on Thursday, January 5th
