COM Women’s Basketball Out Hustled By Contra Costa In 71-44 Loss

The final game of the season for the Mariners was much like many others in the 2016-2017 season, begin strong, but wear down over time. Marin jumped out to an early first quarter lead before relinquishing it in the second quarter and fading by end of 40 minutes of play. Both Marin and their opponent Contra Costa featured just five players, but the visitors managed to keep their energy throughout, resulting in a 71-44 Marin loss.

The Mariners were the more energetic team at the tip as they raced out to a quick lead, before ceding most of it back to Contra Costa. The Mariners held a 14-12 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. The second quarter saw an explosive spark from Contra Costa as they erased the Mariners' slim advantage and built a double digit lead 32-22 at halftime. Amari Allison was Marin's leading scorer with 13 of the team's 22 points.

Marin was sluggish the first few minutes of the third quarter, allowing Contra Costa to swell their lead to 36-22. Marin made a nice run to get it within 12 at the end of the third 49-37. The Mariners would get no closer as Contra Costa pushed the lead to 57-38 with seven minutes remaining in the game. Marin's Tori Buckley fouled out with five minutes left and Marin played the remainder with just four players.  The final score of 71-44 did not belie the intensity of the game for the first 30 minutes of play. Both teams competed and had a chance to pull out a victory.

Allison finished the game with 18 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Ureka Abbushi had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists in her final game as a Mariner. Dierra Mize led Contra Costa with 21 points and Keyauna Harrison had a double double with 10 points, and 12 rebounds while adding seven blocks.
