Women’s Basketball Opens Season With 57-49 Win Over Gavilan College

The Mariners opened their season with a fast and furious victory over the Gavilan College Rams 57-49. Marin jumped out to an early double digit lead in the first quarter and managed to hold on despite a relentless shooting attack by Gavilan. Marin got double digit contributions from three players making their Mariners debuts.

The Mariners opened the game with an early lead as they managed to score 17 points in the first quarter, while limiting their opponents to just seven points. Victoria Lane made her Mariners debut in style as she scored eight first quarter points with a variety of layups, floaters and jump shots.   

Gavilan bounced back in the second quarter as they began to find their offensive rhythm. Donatella MaCleod nailed a pair of three pointers, while the Marin offense was less efficient in the second. Marin held a 29-19 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter saw Gavilan make their move as they nearly doubled their offensive output with 16 third quarter points. The Marin offense went a bit stagnant and Gavilan cut the lead to 42-35. The visitors made it close in the fourth quarter but Marin held them off with late clutch layup by Lane to make the final score 57-49.

San Marin graduate Kaleah Williams led all scorers with 19 points including 5-6 from the free throw line. Lane was right behind her with 18 points of her own while Novato grad Janea Early added 16 points including 6-10 from the free throw line. MaCleod led Gavilan with 12 points all from made three point shots.

Next up for Marin is a home game against Cabrillo College on Saturday, November 11th at 2pm.
