Women’s Basketball Falls to Cabrillo on Last Second Shot 62-60

With the game tied at 60-60 with 7.7 remaining, the visiting Seahawks from Cabrillo College inbounded the ball. It found the hands of Julissa Torres, who flung up a shot from just behind the free throw line that banked into give Cabrillo a two point lead with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. Marin was unable to score in the remaining second and fell to Cabrillo 62-60. It was a well contested game with wild lead changes in the final quarter.

A sloppy first quarter saw both teams with several turnovers, Kyra Bolden had a pair of baskets for the Mariners who trailed 13-12 after the first ten minutes of play.

The pace picked up in the second quarter as Janea Early began to impose her will on the low block. Cabrillo countered with several difficult three point shots and the Seahawks took a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Marin pulled close in the third quarter, but a late push by Cabrillo slowed the Marin advance as they continued to trail by five, 50-45. The fourth and final quarter was hugely entertaining, as the Mariners tied the game up at 50 early on. Cabrillo responded with an 8-0 run to put the game temporarily out of reach before Kaleah Williams, Victoria Lane and Bolden responded with a 10-0 run of their own to put the Mariners on top by two, 60-58.

With under a minute remain a foul on Marin gave Cabrillo two free throws and a chance to tie. After converting both to tie the game at 60, the Marin's Maya Murry-Pena drove baseline, but her layup attempt was off as Cabrillo grabbed the rebound. After a timeout, Torres made her mark with the game winning shot.

Janea Early led the Mariners with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kyra Bolden had 15 points and four rebounds while Victoria Lane filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Next up for Marin is a Monday road trip to Salinas to face off against Hartnell College at 5pm.
