The Mariners took a one day road trip to scenic Monterey where they were met in force by the MPC Lobos. A back and forth affair ensured, Marin dominated the inside, while Monterey put on a shooting clinic from beyond the arc. It came down to the final seconds, but the Mariners could not pull out a victory in a tough 74-71 loss on the road.
Both teams came out of the gate at breakneck speed. Marin and Monterey scored quickly, though neither could gain separation from the other. After 10 minutes of competition the Mariners held a 17-14 advantage over the Lobos. The second quarter saw the score swing back towards Monterey as they outscored Marin by four to take a 35-34 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams combined to score 53 points as Monterey held a slim one point advantage in the period. Marin trailed 62-60 with 10 minutes remaining to play. The fourth took on a much slower pace than the third quarter, but it remained just as tight. Marin trailed by three in the waning seconds when Janea Early hosted what could have been the game tying shot, however she was whistled for a questionable travel which cost the Mariners a chance to tie.
Early led the Mariners with 25 points on 8-15 shooting and 9-13 from the free throw line. She added nine rebounds and two assists on the evening as well. Victoria Lane had her second double double of the season with a very impressive stat line. Lane was the second leading scorer with 18 points on 7-16 from the floor and dished out 13 assists while grabbing nine rebounds and swiping five steals. The sophomore has scored in double digits in all nine games played. Kaleah Williams added 12 points of her own while Kyra Bolden had nine points and eight rebounds for the Mariners.
Monterey was led by Marielle Tuazon who had 30 points, including 7-8 from beyond the arc. Alissa Foster made five threes and added 16 to the tally for the Lobos. As a team Monterey shot 15-20 from three point range.
Marin finished up their non-conference schedule with a 5-4 record and have just one day off before they begin Bay Valley Conference competition at Merritt College on Thursday, December 21st.
