COM Women’s Basketball Throttles Mendocino College 90-36 In BVC Home Opener

Mariners' Women's Basketball wasted no time in taking the game to Mendocino on Saturday. In the Bay Valley Conference home opener, College of Marin showed no hospitality to the Mendocino College Eagles as they crushed them 90-36 in Kentfield.

Marin jumped to a big lead early as the combined talents of Victoria Lane at point guard and Janea Early in the middle yielded quick returns as the Mariners took a 24-8 lead after one quarter of play. Lane had eight points in the first ten minutes of play, while Early had 10 in the paint. The second quarter got Maya Murry-Pena involved as she took advantage of Mendocino in transition to the tune of five fast break layups. Marin posted an astounding 25 second quarter points for a 49-17 lead at the end of the first half of play.

The third quarter had a familiar feel as Marin put up another 20 point quarter. Pena added seven more points in the period, as the Mariners pushed their lead to 69-24. The fourth quarter saw Marin let up just a bit, but still scored 21 more to post a final tally of 90 points. Mendocino scored 12 in the fourth but Marin still managed to eke out the 54 point victory.

Tremendous stat lines abounded for Marin as Early, Lane and Kaleah Williams each had a double double. Early led the team with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Lane had 22 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and six steals. Williams quietly just missed a triple double as she had 15 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and five steals.

Marin shot 50% as a team and made five three pointers on the evening.

The team has just a few days of rest and recovery before they face Laney College on the road on January 2nd.
