Mariners’ Women’s Basketball Suffers First Conference Loss To Laney College 63-52

College of Marin Women's Basketball faced their rivals from Laney College on Tuesday, January 2nd. It was a physical game, that in the end the home team prevailed by a score of 63-52. The Mariners struggled to rebound and failed to make a three pointer for the first time this season.

It was a sloppy affair to start as both teams struggled to find a rhythm. Marin had issues with ball control as they turned it over several times in the first period. Despite their play, they trailed by just one after the first quarter. The second period of play was much like the first with neither team able to make consistent shots from the floor. Laney held a slim lead at halftime as the Mariners were fortunate to be within striking distance.

The second half saw the game remain close, but overtime the strength and physicality of Laney began to wear down Marin. The Laney College Eagles had several bites at the apple on every offensive possession as they outrebounded the Mariners 33-17 overall and 15-4 on the offensive glass.

Victoria Lane and Janea Early put forth their best efforts to keep the game within reach, but it slipped away in the waning minutes as Laney won 63-52.

Lane scored 19 points on 8-15 shooting and added six rebounds, two assists and four steals on the evening. Early also scored 19 while grabbed four boards and four steals of her own.

Marin has just one day to rest and recover before traveling to Pittsburg to face Los Medanos College on Thursday, January 4th.
