Mariners Earn Rare Win Over Solano College 63-58

College of Marin battled, fought and clawed against Solano on Saturday. The result was a positive one as the Mariners earned their second victory over Solano in the past 15 years. The Mariners trailed at the end of every quarter, but mounted a big fourth quarter comeback to take the victory over the Falcons 63-58.

The Mariners opened the game with an early 4-2 lead before a Solano timeout and a 9-2 run gave the visitors an 11-6 advantage. Marin followed with a few buckets of their own and they trailed at the end of the first quarter 15-12.

Solano took a 29-18 point lead midway through the second, but Marin responded in kind. Kaheah Williams hit a step back three with the shot clock winding down, followed by a layup by Victoria Lane to cut the lead to 29-23. Williams added two more layups and Janea Early one of her own and the Mariners went into the halftime break trailing by three 32-29.

Solano scored the first five of the third quarter before the Mariners reeled of eight straight to take a 38-37 lead, their first since early in the first quarter. The lead went back and forth but at the end of the third the Mariners trailed 41-40.  

The final quarter had a slow start and was tied 43-43 with seven minutes remaining. Williams gave the Mariners a lead with a three pointer before a layup by Maya Murry Pena and a three point play by Lane pushed the advantage to 51-43. Solano battled back to make it 57-53 with a minute left, but the Mariners held on take the game 63-58.

Williams and Early led all scorers with 18 points each. Early had another double double with 11 rebounds and three steals. Lane had 14 points, five assists and seven rebounds while Murry-Pena had six points three rebounds and three steals.

The Mariners improved their BVC record to 3-2 and currently sit in fifth place with a road game at Yuba on tap for Tuesday, January 8th.
