Women’s Soccer Storms past Mendocino College 4-1

The Women’s Soccer team as always been built on hardworking players. The constant issue has been getting 11 of them on the field at the same time. At full strength the Mariners are a very competitive team. After falling behind early, Marin scored four straight goals to beat Mendocino College 4-1 on Friday. Kalia Rothlind was the player of the game with two goals and an assist, Jocelyn Lopez had a goal and assist while Grace Gurung also recorded a pair of assists in the win.

The Mendocino College Eagles got on the board early in the first half. A seventh minute goal by Tawnya Thomsen gave the lead to the home team. Marin mounted several poignant attacks and found the equalizer just before the break. Jocelyn Lopez scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Kalia Rothlind in 41st minute and teams reached halftime with the score tied 1-1.

The second half began tentatively before the Mariners took the lead in the 55th minute with a goal by Kelley Komhourt, assisted by Grace Gurung. Grace was the facilitator on the Mariners third goal in the 77th minute as she led Kalia Rothlind on her first goal. Rothlind scored again in the 87th minute with Lopez providing the assist. Not to be outdone by the offense, Mariners goalkeeper Patty Lindsay made seven saves in the victory.

On the win, Coach Chris King said “battling the injuries were are, to be able to show up to two games this week and get two wins in absolutely spectacular. Having to play 90 minutes without any subs and going down a goal in Friday’s game against Mendocino only to score four unanswered goals shows how much this group enjoys battling for each other… its really impressive and a lot of fun to be a part of.”

The Mariners sit at 4-4 in conference play and 4-5 overall. The Mariners host Solano on Tuesday, October 20th before traveling to Napa College on Friday, October 23rd.
