Women’s Soccer Battles Hard In 3-1 Loss To Yuba College

Playing the same team twice in one week always gives opportunities for quick adjustments. After falling on the road at Yuba 4-0 on Tuesday, the Mariners took large steps forward in Friday's return match in Kentfield. Despite losing 3-1, they held the Yuba 49ers scoreless in the first half and took a lead early in the second half. Though Yuba rallied for the victory, it was the most complete performance of the season for the College of Marin Women's Soccer Team.

The game started out quickly with Yuba getting several early chances. Despite the onslaught, the Marin back four did well at repelling Yuba's attack, and while had five shots on goal, Mariners keeper Casey Cavender did an excellent job of keeping a first half clean sheet.

In the second half, the Mariners came out looking to score and succeeded courtesy of an excellent shot from Christine Wilhoyte in the 50th minute giving the team a 1-0 lead. The Mariners held the fort well for until the 65th minute where Yuba broke through with a goal from Evelyn Cordero to tie the game at a goal apiece. The tie did not last long as Yuba scored again just two minutes later as Cordero fed Jennifer Russell for the go ahead goal.  Yuba added a third in the 71st minute with Russell assisting on Yasmin Moreno's goal.

While the Mariners pressed on looking to cut into the lead, it was for naught as the final score line read 3-1 in favor of Yuba. Although they lost, it was a marked improvement on Marin's result from earlier in the week at Yuba.

Coach Andrew Jones was pleased with the effort, "Friday was our strongest performance at home so far this season. We defended very well for most of the game and still managed to create a handful of scoring opportunities. Christine Wilhoyte had a great strike to put us up 1-0 in the second half. We weren't able to hold off Yuba in the second half, but showed our team is improving every week."

Wilhoyte's goal was the first of the season for her, while Cavender had 10 saves in goal for Marin.

The Mariner's travel to Solano on Tuesday, October 25th for a match at 4:00PM
