COM Women’s Soccer Handed First Defeat By Butte College 4-0

The Mariners unbeaten run ended on Friday at the hands of Butte College. The Mariners began the season with a 2-0-2 record, but fell 4-0 to the visitors from Chico. Butte took advantage of their numerous opportunities while Marin's chances were fewer and less fruitful.

Marin had the upper hand early as Tatum Robach had one of her patented runs down the left wing. She received a pass from Bella Santia and raced goalward, but her shot sailed just a bit wide to the right of goal.

Butte's first opportunity did not go to waste as in Lexi Fox got behind the defense in the eighth minute and rifled a shot at goal. The ball beat Marin keeper Shanan Daly but luckily hit off the post. As the Mariners' defense hustled to recover the loose ball, Fox rebounded her miss and scored low and right to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Marin began to press forward looking for the tying goal, but were unable to create any real chances. A broken pass sequence gave Robach a decent look on goal but her shot was saved by the Butte keeper. In response Butte passed several balls through the heart of the Marin defense and got point blank look on goal in the 28th minute. Daly caught the ball while falling back into the net and threw it out, but the linesman ruled the ball at crossed the line for the second Butte goal. Many questioned if the entire ball crossed the line however their objections fell on deaf ears.

Marin entered the halftime break down two goals, and generally not firing on all cylinders, but they kicked it in gear to start the second half. They began to pressure in the midfield and made some noise in the attacking third. A long ball over the top found Robach who was in on goal, but could not pull the trigger before the Butte goalie pounced at her feet and snatched away Marin's best chance for a goal.

Butte weathered the storm from the Marin attack and continued to pepper the Marin Goal. Daly stood on her head to keep the shots out, but Butte found the back of the net again in the 71st minute and another in the 77th minute. The 4-0 lead was enough for the visitors who were content with their haul. The Mariners were frustrated in the final fifteen minutes as Santia and Robach were both forced off due to injury. They are expected to make a quick recovery but it made attacking for Marin very difficult in the final minutes.

The Mariners finished the pre-season with a 2-1-2 record and have a week of recovery before hosting Yuba College in the conference opener on Friday, September 22nd at 4:00PM.
