Women’s Soccer Downs Mendocino College 3-1

Mariners Women's Soccer continued their excellent stretch of recent play with a 3-1 home victory over the Mendocino College Eagles. The Mariners scored just before the halftime whistle and added two more in the second half before a late Mendocino goal thwarted Marin's attempt at a clean sheet.

The Mariners began the game on the front foot with an early chance by Tatum Robach. She received a pass from the midfield and attacked on the left wing. Her left footed shot hit the near post, and the Mariners were unable to snare the ricochet. Ten minutes later Christine Wilhoyte went close with a powerful right footed shot from inside the box, Alexis Johnson, the Mendocino keeper saved the shot to her right which rebounded to Robach. She calmed finished to put Marin in the lead, but she was flagged for offside and the goal was disallowed.

Marin found the breakthrough in the 44th minute as a long cross became a fifty/fifty ball between Marin's Brenda Lopez and Johnson. Lopez's head beat Johnson's hands as the ball found the net for a 1-0 Mariners lead at halftime.

College of Marin came out of the break with burgeoning confidence and continued to attack the Mendocino goal. Liza Bernard was the next Mariner to get on the score sheet as she orchestrated a magnificent run down the right wing and needed with an excellently angled shot for a 2-0 College of Marin lead in the 66th minute. Four minutes later Michelle Godoy tacked on her third goal of the season with a close range effort to put Marin up 3-0.

Marin came within minutes of a clean sheet, but Hannah Norwood scored in the 87th minute for Mendocino to prevent the shutout. Marin closed out the match by maintaining possession and Mariners bagged their seventh victory of the season for their efforts.

Lopez's goal was her third of the season, and Bernard's her second. Shanan Daly made four saves in goal for Marin.

Next up for the Mariners are back to back days with back to back matches against Napa Valley College. On Monday, November 6th at home and Tuesday, November 7th on the road.
