COM Volleyball Falls To Solano In Bay Valley Opener

The pre-season has come and gone for Mariner's Volleyball. After compiling a 3-5 record in non-conference play, COM Women's Volleyball began their quest for the Bay Valley Title on Wednesday. They faced tough Bay Valley Opponent Solano on the road, and fell in straight sets. Despite the loss, it was a good showing by the Mariners who lost their middle to injury just a day before the match.

College of Marin middle Salomi Galodamu was unable to compete due to an injury sustained in practice. Freshman Ashley Chanthongthip stepped in and performed admirably in a starting role.

Solano College came out strong and took control of the match early, winning the opening set 25-17. Despite falling down early, the Mariners kept fighting. While Solano was superior in size, the Mariners were quick and efficient with their ball movement. Solano did continue to attack with authority, wrapping up the second set with a 25-14 score. Marin responded and pushed Solano in the third set, but the home team came out ahead with a 25-18 final set victory.

Although the Mariners fell 3-0, their team played well. For Coach Gera, "Solano is a tough physical team. They run a fast offense and have a talented setter. I was really impressed by Ashley Chanthongthip, who really stepped up for our team and did her job well. Emma Harris showed growth and had the best hitting percentage of her collegiate career. She was poised and effective on the outside for us."

Chanthongthip had a dig and a block in the match. Emma Harris had six kills and just three errors in 21 attacks and added a team high nine digs. Sarah Harris had 15 assists, four digs and a pair of kills, while Alejandra Leon led the team in points with 10, courtesy of seven kills, an ace and two blocks.

The Mariners host Canada College on Saturday, September 16th in their final non-conference match of the year. The match begins at 2pm.
