Women’s Volleyball Trounces Canada College In Straight Sets

Mariner's volleyball opened their home slate with a 3-0 victory over Canada College on Saturday. College of Marin controlled the ball and took advantage of the opposition's mistakes in route to a comfortable win by the scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16.

College of Marin jumped out to a quick lead in the first set, taking an 8-1 advantage over the visiting Colts. Emma Harris has series of excellent serves that propelled the Mariners in front. Bella De Souza and Alejandra Leon were outstanding and carried COM to a 25-15 first set victory.

Canada fought back in the second set and kept it close, but a series of aces and deft passing gave Marin a 14-7 lead midway through the set. Canada got as close as 22-18 before De Souza dashed the visitors hopes with a poignant kill on the left side. The Mariners finished them off with three straight points for the 25-18 second set win.

Emma Harris led the Mariners with 14 points from eight aces and six kills. She added eight digs as well. Sarah Harris had 25 assists, three aces, four kills and four digs, while Bella De Souza led the way with nine kills for the Mariners. Leon had 10 points as well with eight kills and two aces, while adding a team high 12 digs of her own.

Coach Gera was very happy with her team's performance against Canada College, "It was great to see our team take control of the match and maintain calm intensity. Emma Harris did a great job of moving the ball around and being efficient on offense for us. Alexa Honsberger is a great vocal lead for us in the bafck row and continues to improve her ball control as the season progresses. Sarah Harris did an excellent job of distributied the offense as well. She got our middles going early and utilized them throughout the match."

The third set was merely academic as Marin kept the pressure up to finish off the match quickly by a 25-16 score line. The victory was Marin's fourth win overall and finalizes their non-conference record at four wins and five losses.

The Mariners have their second conference game of the season at Contra Costa on Wednesday, September 20th before hosting Yuba College on September 22nd at 6PM.
