COM Volleyball Defeats Yuba 3-2 In Thrilling Home Match

Mariners Volleyball notched their first marquee win of the year on Friday, downing BVC powerhouse Yuba College in five sets. The Mariners out played their opponents in a nail biting affair that needed extra points to settle it. Up 17-16 in the fifth set, Bella De Souza's ace sealed the victory for the Mariners in front of the hometown crowd.

The Mariners began the game on their heels as nerves played an early factor. The team hit very well in the first set, but were out matched by the 49ers' of Yuba College in a 25-21 first set. Marin bounced back nicely in the second set as they kept it close late. It needed extra serves but Marin came out ahead 27-25.

COM coasted through the third set 25-14, while Yuba committed a bevy of hitting errors. Marin used their momentum to take a 24-20 lead in the fourth and potentially clinching set, but Yuba rallied back and beat Marin to force a fifth set.

The fifth set was as even as is possible, as the teams switched sides with an 8-7 Yuba advantage. Neither team had more than a point of separation, while both teams had match point chances they could not convert. Tied up at 16-16, Marin middle Salomi Galodamu had an unassisted kill to set up match point. Bella De Souza's serve was mishandled and the Mariners bench joined the on court players for a celebration.

Alejandra Leon had an outstanding game on the outside with 22 kills and 22 digs. She added two aces and three block assists for a 25.5 point evening. De Souza had nine kills and four aces to go with 15 digs. Sarah Harris had 34 assists, seven digs and a pair of kills while Emma Harris had four kills, three aces and 11 digs of her own.

Marin travels to Napa Valley College on Wednesday before hosting Los Medanos College on Friday, September 29th.
