David first took an interest in Competitive Diving in 1970, while attending Terra Linda High School. His teammate was Mike Klunk. Mike and David often challenged each other to learn new dives and competed together for the next 3 years. David won MCAL’s Varsity Diving title as a Senior in 1973, also placing 3rd at NCS, setting school records that may still exist today. David attended College of Marin in Kentfield, 1974 thru 1975, training under Bob Justice. Coach Justice, himself a National Champion on Trampoline (1958), spent many hours on tramp with David in the spotting belt, teaching him all he could. He took him to the next level: David won Gold in both 1 and 3 meter Diving events at the 1975 California Community College State Championships. From that accomplishment, David earned a Full Diving Scholarship to Pepperdine University, and for the next 2 years represented the Waves in the National Independent Conference and NCAA’s Division I Championships.
David continued diving after college, training at the University of Hawaii under Olympic Coach Wally Nakamoto, where he placed 12th on the 10 meter Platform event at the 1980 US Nationals; in 1985 he represented the USA in the World Maccabiah Games, where he won Silver on Springboard and Gold on 10 meter Platform. David resumed competition in 1991, and has since been active in Masters Diving, having won over 20 National and 8 World Titles.
He’s currently the Masters Rules Chairman for USA Diving. This July he’s heading to Goteborg, Sweden, to compete in the FINA World Masters Aquatic Championships, becoming the youngster in a new age group: 55-59!
David now resides in San Diego, but also splits his time in Marin, running his business, Terra Linda Towing, a company founded by his brother Phil over 30 years ago. He is married with 3 teen daughters.
