Chiu Delivers In Mariners 9-4 Road Win Over Cabrillo College

After back to back nail biters, Mariners Baseball opted for the more traditional and relaxing approach of taking an early lead, building on it, and finishing out the game with a win. Marin split a pair of walk off decisions with Mission College over the weekend.  However on Tuesday, they built a 9-1 lead and maintained control for the 9-4 victory against Cabrillo College.

Marcus Chiu was the hero of the game with a home run, a double and three RBI while Chase Gardner threw six quality innings for his first win of the season.

The home team Cabrillo College scored first from a wild pitch in bottom half of the opening inning. Marin did not take long to strike back as they tied the game in the top of the second with a run scoring wild pitch of their own. After a scoreless bottom half of the second, Marin opened the top of the third with two on with one out and Marcus Chiu at the plate. The sophomore drilled a pitch over the outfield wall for his first round tripper of the year to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead.

Both teams traded scoreless innings until the top of the seventh where Marin put the game away with five additional runs. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on a wild pitch. After reloading the bases, MacLean Meyn drove in a two run single and Jakob Davidson followed it up with a two run double to push the Marin advantage to 9-1. Cabrillo scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and once more in the ninth for a final score of 9-4 in favor of Marin.

Chase Gardner was excellent on the hill for Marin as he yielded just a single run in the first inning and nothing more. He struck out seven in six innings while allowing just four hits and one walk. Chiu walked twice and added a double and a run scored in addition to his home run. Davidson had two hits and two RBI while Meyn had two RBI and two runs scored.

The Mariners record sits at 2-1 after the first three games of the 2017 season.
