Mariners Men’s Basketball Drops Shootout At Solano 98-84

Points were most definitely not at a premium on Friday in Fairfield. The Mariners traveled up highway 37 to take on the Solano College Falcons in a game that eclipsed the 180-point mark. Marin found themselves on a wrong side of an 98-84 score, a game in which each team had six players with double digit scoring. Malik Ghiden paced the Mariners with 20 points while Jalen Chandler was runner up on the team with 15.

The floodgates opened at tip off and a torrent of points shortly followed. The Mariners trailed early thanks to a number of three pointers by the hosting Falcons. Marin battled back using a number of clever drives in the lane and were within 11, 49-38 at halftime.

After the break, the score continued to quick inflate. Both teams put the ball in the bucket with minimal resistance as Solano threatened to surpass triple digits in just 40 minutes of basketball. While the Falcons fell just short of the 100-point mark, they did manage to cruise to a comfortable victory over the Mariners 98-84.

The difference in the game proved to be three-point shooting as the Mariners made just four of 19 attempts while Solano was much more efficient, connecting on 13 of 24 attempts.

Ghiden had 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting for the Mariners and added three rebounds and a steal. Chandler had six made field goals including two three pointers and added nine rebounds to his 15 total points.

Armon Economou of Solano led all scorers with 27 points and led all board crashers with 10 corralled rebounds.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the Bay Valley Conference. Next up for Marin is a home date with the Merritt College Thunderbirds on Wednesday, January 15th. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
