Men’s Basketball Throttled By Alameda In Season Finale

Mariners Men's Basketball needed a win on Friday to have a chance at making the CCCAA State Playoffs. The College of Alameda Cougars did their best buzz saw impression on Friday and thwarted Marin's attempt at postseason basketball. The Cougars jumped out to a 21 point lead at halftime and never looked back as Marin fell 85-53 to close out the season. Ethan Battistini led the team with 16 points in his final game as a Mariner.

The Cougars came out of the gate firing on all cylinders as they lead 15-6 five minutes in. After a timeout by Marin, the visitors from Alameda did not let up, building a double-digit advantage midway through the period. Though the Mariners played hard, a number of mental and physical errors gave Alameda numerous extra chances and points. College of Alameda led Marin 42-22 before taking a 48-27 advantage into the locker room.

The score did not improve in the second half as the Cougars opened on an 11-0 run and led 67-37 with 7:35 left on the clock. Marin did their best, but could not mount a stunning rally. They trialed 77-48 before eventually falling 83-55.

Shooting was the deciding factor as Alameda made 59.3% of field goals, 47.6% of three pointers and 64.7% of free throws. The Mariners were limited to 34.6%, 20% and 50% in those categories. The hosting Mariners turned the ball over 17 times compared to just nine for Alameda. The Cougars had five players in double figures, while the Mariners had just a pair.

Battistini led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. He made 6-10 shots from the floor and knocked down a three pointer to boot. Franco Barefield had a fine final game for Marin with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Mariners finished the 2019-2020 season with a 14-13 overall record and 8-8 fifth place finish in the Bay Valley Conference.
