Every day, and every game the College of Marin Men's Soccer team gets better. Three days after falling 5-2 in their opening match of the season, the Mariners had the opportunity to grab their first points of the season. The bounces however, did not go Marin's way in a 2-0 loss to Monterey Peninsula College.

The Mariners held the edge in play in the first thirty minutes of the game with several dangerous attacks on the Monterey goal but were unable to find the back of the net. The first unfortunate bounce came in the 35^th minute as a Monterey shot beat Marin goalkeeper William Finnie and hit off the left post. It ricocheted right back to the attacker who converted the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Marin pressured the Monterey back four, but failed to equalize before halftime.

Marin opened the second half with great resolve, drawing a penalty in the 50^th minute, giving the Mariners a chance to tie the game at a goal each. The penalty try was low and to the left, but was pushed aside by a great play from the Monterey goalkeeper. The Mariners had a chance to score on the rebound, but the shot went awry.  College of Marin kept attacking but were constantly stymied by the Monterey defense. Monterey grabbed a second goal late to give the final score line of 2-0.

Head Coach Jake Morrison on the match, "It was one of those games where you felt you just needed that little bit of luck and unfortunately it didn't bounce our way today.  We had some very good spells on both sides of the ball and we have an opportunity to come back tomorrow and get better."

He did see progress for his team "In these next few weeks it is really about moving forward and building off of our success game to game and training.  Everyone contributed today and I look forward to seeing us continue to progress over this preseason period."

The Mariners have a short turnaround with a match against Morrison's former team Cañada College on September 3^rd at 5:00pm in Kentfield.
