Geoffrey Aguiar, a former Dominican University standout and Merritt College head coach has been named the new Head Coach for the Men’s Soccer Program at College of Marin.  He takes over for Michael Crivello, who left the program in the fall.

 “I'm very excited to join the team here at College of Marin. It's not easy to leave the student-athletes and the department at Merritt. That said, I truly believe in the potential here. The structure and organization of this athletic department and the college itself is absolutely a building block for success,” said Aguiar.

Aguiar is from Hayward and is a product of the community college system, playing two seasons at Las Positas College during which he earned All-Conference, All-State, All-Far West Region and Conference Player of the Year Awards. He transferred to play at Dominican University in San Rafael before earning his Bachelors and Masters in Kinesiology from California State University (CSU), East Bay.

“Geoff is a rising star in Community College Men’s Soccer. He is highly regarded among his peers and he has tremendous pedigree and a passion for using soccer as a means to create opportunities for student-athletes,” said College of Marin Athletic Director Ryan Byrne. “It’s rare to ask other community college head coaches in the area, the same guys you are competing and recruiting against, and have them all say, ‘He is a great guy and a great hire.’”

Aguiar was most recently the Head Coach at Merritt College for the previous three seasons. Prior to that he coached at Las Positas where his team won the Coast Conference in 2013. During his three seasons at the helm at Merritt College, he led his teams from near the bottom of the Bay Valley Conference in 2015 to co-conference champions in fall of 2018. Additionally, he coaches in the Olympic Development Program Cal North State Team and is a professor at CSU East Bay in the Kinesiology and Teacher Education departments.

 “His references are glowing and he is of the highest caliber as a coach. With what he was able to do at Merritt College and as a Kinesiology instructor at Cal State East Bay, he really has the total package. He’s an excellent fit for where we are going,” said Byrne.

Aguiar is excited to begin his coaching tenure at College of Marin, “There are so many bright and talented student-athletes in this area, I'm excited to get to work and start recruiting them. As a former collegiate student-athlete in this area, it is great to be back, and I hope that with our beautiful new facilities and great administrative support, we can get this soccer program where it needs to be.”

Byrne is also excited about Aguiar and the men’s soccer program.

 “This community has such a strong foundation with soccer in terms of the youth, club and high school programs. We have amazing student-athletes and coaches right in our backyard and I’m excited to showcase how College of Marin can help get student-athletes to the next level,” said Byrne.

“Our goals are always academic first. We want to lay the groundwork for student-athletes to be the best they can be and to transfer to four-year institutions. That said, I believe we are entering a new era in terms of our competitive success.”
