College of Marin Men's Soccer hosted the Modesto Pirates in a rare Thursday tilt. A return to the turf was not enough to help the Mariners grab a victory as the visiting Pirates scored a trio of goals in route to a 3-0 clean sheet defeat over Marin.

The Mariners' offense struggled to create many opportunities in the attacking third, as they relied on the counter attack for much of the game. Marin did see the first scoring opportunity of the match as Peter Carroll and Kristoffer Wangberg broke past the defense with a chance on goal in the eighth minute.

Wangberg was viciously tackle at the edge of the 18-yard box, drawing a yellow card on Modesto's Edwin Mata. They were denied a penalty, but earned direct free kick that was blocked by the wall. From that moment forward, the momentum was in Modesto's pocket.

Modesto was the better team for the subsequent 20 minutes but it was not until minute number 30 that saw the visitors take the lead. Bryan Millan took a diagonal pass inside the box and beat Marin's Bryan Rodriguez to the left for a 1-0 lead. It took an inch perfect pass, and a well-timed run, but the Pirate got behind the Marin defense to put his team ahead.

The Mariners were unable to respond and in the 40^th minute Modesto doubled their lead with a goal by Alex Cervantes with a close-range effort from the left channel.  The teams went to the break with different intentions for the remainder of the match. The Mariners hoped to mount a comeback and Modesto to grow their lead.

Neither team got their way for the first 40 minutes of the second half. The score remained 2-0 as both teams struggled to maintain possession in the opponents' third. It was a battle of the midfield that neither team won nor lost.

The match was finally decided in the 86^th minute as Angel Carillo got behind the defense and blasted a ball home for a 3-0 lead to cement the match. Carillo previously assisted on Cervantes' first half goal.

It was the Mariners third loss in as many matches, but there were spells of quality play by the team. They introduced a number of new Mariners, as 18 different players competed for Marin. Bryan Rodriguez did his best in goal, and made three acrobatic saves, but could not keep the ball out of the net.

Next up for the Mariners is a home match against the Butte College Roadrunners on Tuesday, September 10^th at 4pm.
