Carroll’s Brace Bags Mariners 3-0 Victory Over Contra Costa

The Mariners got their first win in BVC competition on Friday and it came with minimal drama. Peter Carroll scored twice for Marin and Dany Rodas opened his account with a goal of his own. The Mariners led at the break, and built their advantage in the second half to cruise to a 3-0 win over the visiting Contra Costa Comets.

The Mariners and Comets were evenly matched for the majority of the first half of play. The Mariners netted early on, but it was called off due to a foul. Marin managed just three first half shots, while the Comets recorded four. It looked to be a scoreless first half until the 43rd minute.

Marin's Brian Diaz made an excellent run from the midfield and was clipped just outside the Comets' 18-yard box. Peter Carroll took the resulting direct and struck gold as left footed shot settled into the side netting just past Comets' keeper Orlando Perez.

The Mariners went to the break with a 1-0 lead, knowing there was much work to do.  The Mariners led at some point over their previous four matches but could not record a victory in any of them. Friday's match against Contra Costa proved to be different.

Marin doubled their advantage in the 56th minute at Osbaldo Zacarias played a perfect diagonal ball to the streaking Dany Rodas. The Freshman powered a right footed shot across the keeper and into the net to put Marin on top 2-0.

Nine minutes later the Mariners struck again as Peter Carroll intercepted a clearance from Perez and blasted a long range shot over the out of position keeper for Marin's third goal of the day. The Mariners bent but did not break on defense as they denied Contra Costa any chance to mount a comeback.

As the whistle sounded the team rejoiced in their first win since August 27th.

Bryan Rodriguez recorded his first clean sheet of the season, earning the win and recording six saves on the day. Carroll scored season goals six and seven, while Rodas scored his first for the Mariners.

The Mariners look to build on their win with another strong performance in their next match. They travel to Ukiah on Tuesday, October 15th to take on the Mendocino College Eagles at 4pm.
