Mariners Jump Into Third Place With 3-2 Win Over Mendocino

College of Marin Men's Soccer grabbed their second win in as many matches on Tuesday. They defeated the hosting Mendocino College Eagles on the road 3-2, thanks to a trio of first half goals. The win advanced the Mariners BVC record to 2-3, good for a three-way tie for third place with the Eagles, and Contra Costa Comets. Marin trailed early on in the match, but a first half push gave them the lead for good.

The Mendocino College Eagles took the lead in the 11th minute as Cristian Muniz powered a shot past Mariners' keeper Bryan Rodriguez for a 1-0 Mendocino lead. They doubled their advantage in the 25th minute as Jose Ayala set up Joel Castillas to put the Mariners in a 2-0 hole.

Despite being down the Mariners were certainly not out and commenced their impressive comeback almost immediately.

Kristoffer Wangberg wonder strike in the 30th minute cut the Mariners' deficit in half. The Freshman smashed a half volley past the Mendocino keeper amongst four defenders from outside the box. It was his sixth score of the year and put Marin on the comeback trail.

Marin earned a free kick in the 36th minute and tied the match as a result. The ball was placed on the left wing about 25 yards out. Jonathan Raphael hit a powerful shot on frame that eluded defenders and the keeper to find the net and tie the match at 2-2.

The Mariners took the lead just before the break as Peter Carroll setup Dany Rodas for what would be the game winning goal. Marin held a 3-2 lead at halftime and carried it through to grab the victory.

The only downside to the match was an injury late to Wangberg, he was carted off the field and his status is unknown.

Wangberg bagged his sixth goal of the season, second only to Carroll's seven. Raphael and Rodas each grabbed their second goals of the year. Bryan Rodriguez made four saves to secure the Mariners second straight win.

Next up for Marin is a home match against BVC leading Napa Valley College on Friday, October 18th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
