Mariners’ Soccer Held To 2-2 Draw With Yuba

College of Marin Men's Soccer extended their unbeaten run in conference play to five straight matches but were left wanting more on Friday against Yuba. The Mariners led 2-1 in the final minutes of the match but yielded the equalizer late to the 49ers and settled for the draw. Peter Carroll scored twice for the Mariners who have not lost in BVC play since October 8th.

Marin was the aggressive side to start, with four shots on goal in the opening 15 minutes. 49ers' keeper Arnulfo Mercado saved the first three shots, but could not deny Peter Carroll in the 13th minute. Osbaldo Zacarias served the ball up to the freshman striker who did not miss to put Marin ahead 1-0.

The Mariners held their lead for nearly 20 minutes, but an injury and on field shifting allowed Yuba to equalize. An injury substitution caused the Mariners to play out of position for just a split second. That mix up was sufficient enough for Erik Ruiz to pass to Donovan Guzman for a game tying goal.

The teams went to the break tied up at 1-1 though Marin was the superior side with eight first half shots to Yuba's three.

The second half was an even affair for the first 18 minutes prior to Carroll's second goal. Breiner Rodas Vasquez made an excellent run to the right side of Yuba's yard box. In the scrum he delivered a low ground cross to Carroll who finished into an empty net for a 2-1 advantage.

The game took a turn just minutes later as Emilio Flores Posada was shown a red card in the 67th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Down a man the Mariners were forced to play on the back foot for the final 23 minutes of the match. They played solid defense for almost 20 minutes but a tough foul call resulted in a free kick 25 yards out for Yuba.

Marin keeper Bryan Rodriguez parried the shot, but the rebound fell to Yuba's Diego Patia who scored on the open net to tie the match at 2-2. The Mariners tried to respond but could not score before the final whistle.

Carroll scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season. He leads the conference in goals and 24th in the state. Zacarias recorded his third assist of the year while Rodas Vasquez had his first of the season.

The match kept Marin tied with Yuba for third place in the Bay Valley Conference. Next up for the Mariners is a road match at Contra Costa on Friday, November 8th.
