Stingy Defense Shuts Out Skyline

Stingy Defense Shuts Out Skyline

The Skyline Trojans visited Kentfield for the final match before the Mariners open conference play. Both teams brought the intensity for the full 90 minute contest. A fine defensive effort was exactly what the Mariners needed, as they would claim the win by a slim 1-0 margin.

Skyline controlled the opening kickoff and began the game on the attack. Goalkeeper Chris DeLeon made a spectacular save to keep the game level at zero early, and the Mariners controlled the first half from there. Five first half shots and several more opportunities resulted in beautiful team goal just before the intermission. Brian Diaz and Brennan Blondin combined to assist Alex Izaguirre, who finished the play with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

In the second half, both teams maintained their focus and energy throughout. The Mariners threatened several times, but were unable to put away a second goal. The team defensive effort and DeLeon, who would finish the game with three huge saves, were key in securing the win.

The Mariners conclude their non-conference schedule with the win over Skyline. Bay Valley Conference opener is scheduled for Tuesday 9/28, as Napa Valley College travel to Kentfield.
