Mariners Swim Team Sets Bar High At Opening Meet of The Season

Marin opened the 2018 Swim & Dive season on a high note, but the hopes of the team are even higher. Several Mariners had top finishes at the Laney College Pentathlon, including many freshman who began their collegiate careers that day.

On the day the Mariners managed 13 top three finishes and five outright victories. Cruse was magnificent for the Mariners with three wins while Dominique Duro had one win and two second place finishes.

Marin competed well in every competition. Nick Cruse debuted in the 100 Yard Butterfly and was victorious with a final time of 55.13 seconds. His counterpart on the Women's side, Sophia Bruinsma took fourth in the same even with a time of 1:24.15.

Freshman Dominique Duro was victorious in the women's 100 Yard Backstroke besting the field of twenty swimmers with a time of 1:05.85. Skylar Rios-Merwin of Marin took fifth while Joanna Poliseri finished 11th for the Mariners.

Cruse and Bruinsma were back at it in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with Cruse grabbing his second win of the day as he finished with a time of 1:04.97 in the finals. Bruinsma took second in 1:19.54 while Angelica Poliseri finished sixth in the same event.

Marin had five women compete in the 100 Yard Freestyle, Duro took second, short of first by less than half a second. Rios-Merwin was eighth, while Joanna Poliseri finished 17th ahead of teammates Jackie Gibbons and Lindsey Going.

Cruse breezed through the 100 Yard Freestyle, to win in 50.04 seconds, more than five seconds ahead of second place. Mariners Scott Swanson took third in the event with a time of 55.47. Swanson competed in the Men's 100 Yard IM and took third place with a time of 1:07.17. He was victorious in the Men's 50 Yard IM with a time of 31.72 seconds in a race that also included teammate Ferguson Cherry.

Rios-Merwin took second in the Women's 50 Yard IM while Joanna Poliseri took seventh and Lindsay Going 12th in the same event.

The Women's 50 Yard Freestyle was an extremely close race as Julia Ng of Sacramento City College edged out Duro by 0.03 seconds. Bruinsma took third just behind Duro with a time of 27.80 seconds.

Marin has a week of recovery before traveling to Sacramento City College on Friday, February 23rd.
