Aquatic Mariners Challenge Tough Competition at Mariner Invitational

College of Marin Swim & Dive Hosted The 13th Annual Mariner Invitational on Saturday at the College of Marin Indian Valley Campus. Competing against athletes from Pasadena City College, Laney College and Chabot College amongst others, Marin performed admirably with victories in five separate events and top five finishes in 11 other events. Nick Cruse won two events, while Skylar Rios-Merwin and Dominique Duro each took first in one of their own. Lone Mariners' diver Thomas Brawley took first place in the 1 meter diving competition.

Nick Cruse grabbed first place in the Men's 100 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 55.37 seconds he duplicated his success in the 100 Yard Fly with a time of 53.69. He placed second in the Men's 100 Yard Free in 49.27 seconds.

Diver Thomas Brawley was first in the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 107.80 points. Brawley also competed on the Men's 200 Yard Free Relay whre the team took second in 1:38.01.

Dominique Duro grabbed first in the Women's 50 Yard Back. She placed first with a time of 29.96 seconds. Teammates Rios-Merwin, Dakota Chamberlain and Lindsey Going also competed. Duro narrowly missed out on her second win in the Women's 400 Yard Individual Medley as she finished second with a time of 5:15:42. She also took second in the Women's 100 Yard Free with a time of 57.61.

Skylar Rios-Merwin was victorious in the Women's 200 Yard Breast with a time of 2:45.65. Teammate Sophia Bruinsma was fourth in the same competition. Rios-Merwin was third in the highly competitive 50 Yard Free with a time of 29.52 seconds. Shannon Madsen, Maria Chumbes, Jackie Gibbons and Going all took part in the race.

Scott Swanson had a pair of third place finishes on the afternoon. In the 200 Yard Free, Swanson finished with a time of 2:02.91 and in the 500 Yard Free he completed the circuit in 5:40.24.

Arel Shoua did very well with a pair of second place finishes in the 50 and 100 Yard Back races. In the 50 he finished in 31.49 and in the 100 Yard Shoua had a time of 1:05.11.

The Mariners have three meets in the book. They have a week of training ahead before they travel to Livermore for the Las Positas College Hawk Invitational on Friday, March 23rd.
