Mariners Swim & Dive started their 2019 campaign in the California capital on Friday, taking part in the Sacramento City Invitational. Four female Mariners combined to score 86 points from 10 events, good for the fourth best average of any of the seven competing teams. The team is composed of sophomore Shannon Madsen and freshmen Keturah Fluno, Sasha Urban and Genevieve Wyatt. Urban impressed for Marin taking sixth place in the individual competition.
Sasha Urban debuted for the Mariners' and posted top six finishes in all three of her races. She took sixth place in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, earning 13 points with her time of 2:35.66. Urban was fourth in the 100 Yard Breast with a time of 1:18.03, taking 15 points from the field of 16 swimmers. Her best performance came in the 200 Yard Breast where Urban was second of 10 swimmers finishing with a tie of 2:49.23 just four seconds off the first-place finish. Her 45 points was sixth best of all female swimmers in the competition.
Madsen is the lone sophomore on the Mariners' roster and she impressed in her three races. In the 100 Yard Freestyle she took 10th place with a time of 1:06.04. She earned seven points from the field of 30 competitors. Madsen also finished 10th in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2.32.26 to earn another seven points for her team. She finished her individual races with ninth place in the 100 Yard Breast in 1:32.28 to earn nine additional points for a total of 23 on the day.
Fluno made her first dive into the pool in the women's 50 yard free, completing the race in 47.1 seconds. Wyatt also began her Mariners career in the same event, besting Fluno with a final time of 44.26 seconds.
The quartet participated in a pair of relays at the meet. They took 13th in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 2:44.59 earning the team 8 points. They took 11th place in the 200 Freestyle Relay, completing the race in 2:29.85 to earn 10 team points.
The Mariners have two weeks of recovery and training before the Mariner Invitational at the College of Marin Indian Valley Campus on Saturday, March 9th.
