Swim Represents Mariners Well At Hawk Invitational

College of Marin Swimming faced their toughest in Livermore. The Mariners took part in the 2019 Hawk Invitational that boasted teams from 18 colleges and 352 athletes in total. Marin's squad of five was undaunted by the challenge and produced some excellent performances including an outright victory for Nicholas Cruse in one race. The team earned a combined 113 points, good for 14th place ahead Solano, Clovis, Foothill and Fresno City Colleges.

Cruse swam in four races and earned points in each. His best performance was in the 500 Yard Free where he took first in 4:47.54, more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. He took 7th place in the 200 Yard Free with a time of 1:49.32. It was a tight race as three seconds separated 1st through 9th place. The sophomore also took 11th in the 100 Yard Fly and 13th in the 100 Yard Breast. Overall Cruse earned 42 points for the Mariners in his four events.

Freshman Sasha Urban had an excellent meet for Marin as she earned points in three of her five entries. Her best showing was the 50 Yard Breast where she finished in fifth place with a time of 34.67 second. She took seventh place in the 100 Yard Breast in a time of 1:15.52 and was 12th in the 200 Yard Breast with a time of 2:45:54. Urban also placed 18th in the 100 Yard Free and 21st in the 200 Yard IM. Overall Urban garnered 31 points from her five races.

Sophomore Shannon Madsen also entered five races and was very consistent throughout. She earned points with a 14th place finish in the 50 Yard Breast in 37.72 seconds and 16th place in the 100 Yard Breast with a time of 1:23.29. Madsen also competed in the 50, 100 and 200 Yard Free where she recorded times of 28.27 seconds, 1:02.57 and 2:20.32 respectively. She earned four points for her team.

Ketura Fluno took part in four events, but unfortunately was disqualified for the 100 Yard Back. Her finest showing was in the 50 Yard Back with a time of 45.85 good, for 29th place. The freshman also swam in both the 50 and 100 Yard Free.

Elsa Ledesma took part in the 100 Yard Free and finished with a personal record time of 1:23.06.

The Mariners quartet of Fluno, Ledesma, Madsen and Urban combined for a pair of relays. The group took seventh in the 400 Yard Medley Relay with final time of 5:47.00. They also took 11th in the 200 Yard Free Relay with a time of 2:14.61. The two team races earned the Mariners another 36 points on the day.

Overall it was a great meet with stiff competition for the Mariners as their season winds down. Their last regular season meet of the year is Saturday, April 6th at the Chabot College Invitational in Hayward.
