The College of Marin Swim team finished off their 2019 season with an excellent showing at the Bay Valley Conference Championships at Solano College. Freshman Sasha Urban and sophomore Nick Cruse both finished in the top five of each of their four respective races. Shannon Madsen, Keturah Fluno, Genevieve Wyatt and Elsa Ledesma each set personal bests over the multi day meet.
Sasha Urban capped of an impressive 2019 campaign with four excellent racers at the Conference Championships. She began her meet with a second-place finish in the Women's 200 Yard IM. She took second in the prelims with a time of 2:31.74 before besting her self by over 2.5 seconds in the final. Her final time of 2:29.16 was a personal best. She finished third in the 50 Yard Breast with a prelim time of 33.71 seconds and a finals' time of 33.11 seconds, just 0.75 seconds off the time of the victor. Her duplicated her third-place finish in the 100 Yard Bread with final time of 1:13.17 and placed fifth in the 200 Yard Breast in 2:40.60.
Sophomore Nick Cruse had an excellent showing with four top five finishes including a victory in the 500 Yard Free. Cruse opened with a prelim time of 4:54.42 in the distance discipline and improved with a 4:48.08 time in the final more than six seconds ahead of the nearest competition. He placed second in the 200 Yard Free with a time of 1:46.20 just two seconds out first place. Cruse placed fifth in the Yard Back with a finals time of 1:03.39 and took third in the 100 Yard IM with a time of 55.22 seconds.
Sophomore Shannon Madsen competed in the 50 Yard Breast, as well as the speed disciplines and was a factor in each. Madsen began her Championships with a 13th place finish in the 50 Yard Breast with a time of 37.99 in the final. She took 12th in the field of 24 in the 50 Yard Free with a time of 27.45 seconds. She was also 12th in the 200 Yard Free with a finals time of 2:16.44. Madsen's final race was the 100 Yard Free where she finished in 1:00.39 good for 15th place.
The Freshman Genevieve Wyatt raced in the 50 Yard Free and the 50 Yard Backstroke. She took 34th in the 50 Free with a time of 43.53 seconds. In the 50 Yard Backstroke she set a personal best with a time of 51.82 seconds.
Freshman Elsa Ledesma competed in four races at the BVC Championships, the 50 Yard Back, 50 Yard Free, 100 Yard Free and the 200 Yard Free. She opened her meet with an 18th place finish in the 50 Yard Back. She bested her prelim time to finish in 55.69 seconds. She swam the 50 Yard Free in 35.55 seconds but just missed out on qualifying for the finals. Her prelim race in the 100 Yard Free placed her 26th, just two spots out of qualifying position. She did qualify for the 200 Yard Free final and took 21st with a time of 3:30.45.
Freshman Keturah Fluno closed out her 2019 season with four entries including the 50 Yard Back, 50 Yard Free, 100 Yard Back and the 100 Yard Free. Fluno started off on a sour note as she was disqualified from the 50 Yard Back final for a missed touch. Her prelim time of 43.29 would have placed her 15th in the finals. She rebounded with a time of 39.88 in the 50 Yard Free, close to a personal best. Fluno took 17th in the 100 Yard Back with a time of 1:40.72 and finished with a time of 1:30.45 in the 100 Yard Free. Fluno improved at every meet throughout the season and looks to carry that momentum into her Sophomore season.
While the Mariners' team finished their 2019 season a few individuals have a chance to continue. Both Urban and Cruse have a chance to qualify for the State Championships which begin Thursday, May 2nd at East Los Angeles College.
