Mariners’ Swim Team Opens 2020 At CCSF

The College of Marin Swim Team made their 2020 debut on Friday at City College of San Francisco. The Mariners deployed a team of five women and three men that competed admirably as a group. The team combined to record four top five finishes and a number six ranking for the women. Sophomore Sasha Urban and Freshman Remy Pelzman each recorded an individual second place finish.  

The Mariners opened the day with a fifth-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The group of Urban, Kassandra Cavender, Remy Pelzman and Keturah Fluno combined for a time of 2:16.79.

Urban competed in three individual events following the relay. She took 10th place in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:19.78 before following with a fourth-place finish in the Women's 100 Yard Individual Medley. Her time of 1:10.62, was just ahead of teammate Pelzman who took fifth. Urban's finest showing came in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. The second-year swimmer finished second with a time of 1:16.92, less than a second behind the victor.

 Pelzman had an excellent aquatic debut for the Mariners. After the opening relay, she took second in the Women's 50 Yard Butterfly in just 32.06 seconds. She was 0.53 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Pelzman finished her day with fifth place finish in the 100 Yard IM with a time of 1:11.40.

Sophomore Kassandra Cavender served as the anchor in the medley relay before embarking on her individual events. She placed 22nd in the 200 Yard Free with a time of 2:34.29 before taking eighth in the 100 Yard Backstroke as she clocked in a time of 1:17.05. Cavender took 17th in the 50 Yard Free in 31.46 and finished her day with a DQ in the 100 Yard IM.

Keturah Fluno opened the day as the opener in the team relay before finishing in 13th place in the 100 Yard Back with a time of 1:45.69. She also swam in the 50 Yard Free with a time of 41.09 seconds.

The Marin Women's Team also included the debut of Serena Mejia who competed in the 50 Yard Butterfly with a time of 55.58 seconds and the 50 Yard Free in 38.64 seconds.

On the Men's Team, Matheus Borges completed the 200 Free in 2:20.37. He finished the 50 Yard Free in 27.00 seconds flat and was a DQ in the 100 Yard Individual Medley.

Iram Hernandez began his Mariners' Swim career with a pair of individual competitions. He raced in the 200 Yard Free, finishing in 2:53.60 and the 50 Yard Free with a time of 31.82 seconds.

Not to be forgotten was Rosbel Santos who made his aquatic start in the 50 Yard Free. He finished his race in 36.68 seconds.

The Marin Women's Team completed the meet with 115 points, ahead of both Hartnell and Solano Colleges.

Head Coach Steve Carrera was positive about his team's results, "I am very proud of how we represented ourselves and the College of Marin."

The meet was the Mariners' first of eight on their regular season schedule. They have a week of training ahead, before they visit the College of San Mateo on Valentine's Day for the Coast Conference Kick Off.
