Swim Battles Conference Foes At Coast Conference Kick Off

The Mariners Swim Team enjoyed their second solid meet in as many weeks on Friday. As a group, the four women and four men that represented Marin at the College of San Mateo, combined to record six top five finishes on the day. Sasha Urban had a part in three of them, Remy Pelzman had two her own and Matheus Borges also had a top five finish at the Coast Conference Kick Off.

The day began with a 200 Yard Medley Relay for the women. The team of Keturah Fluno, Kassandra Cavender, Pelzman and Urban combined to take seventh place with a time of 2:19.34. Fluno began the race and Cavender served as the anchor.

Pelzman had an excellent showing in her second career meet. After contributing in the relay, she raced in the women's 200 Yard IM and took fourth place with a time of 2:39.63. She followed that with her first career victory, a 59.32 second sprint in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Pelzman finished her competition with a strong ninth place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:16.45.

Urban took park in four individual races as well as the team relay. She took third place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:15.12, more than a second and a half better than her time a week previous. She followed up with a third place finish in the Women's 200 Yard IM in 2:34.97 seconds, just head of Pelzman. Urban's best showing was in the 200 Yard Breast where she finished second in 2:45.42. She closed out her meet with an eighth place showing in the 100 Yard Free with a time of 1:01.40.

Matheus Borges did well in his second ever Mariners' meet. He began the day with a time of 2:16.17 time in the 200 Yard Free good for fifth place. He raced in the 50 Yard Free with a time of 26.05 seconds and closed out his day in the 100 Yard Free with a time of 59.69 seconds.

Sophomore swimmers Keturah Fluno and Kassandra Cavender each had solid days in the pool after opening with the team relay. Fluno posted a time of 40.05 seconds in the 50 Yard Free. She also raced in the 100 Yard Free and finished in 1:53.81. Kassandra Cavender competed in the team relay as well as the short distance free events. She took 17th in the women's 50 Free with a time of 30.24 seconds and was 20th in the 100 Yard Free in 1:07.26

Iram Hernandez, Sebastian Masters and Rosbel Santos all pushed themselves as they took part in the freestyle races. Hernandez began with a 13th place showing in the 200 Yard Free with a time of 2:48.51. He followed that up with a 32.19 second showing in the 50 Yard and handled the 100 Yard in 1:15.21. Sebastian Masters made his Mariners debut in the same events as Santos. Masters completed the 50 Yard Free in 32.42 seconds and the 100 Yard Free in 1:15.82.  Rosbel Santos took part in the 50 and 100 Yard Free finishing in 34.71 seconds and 1:29.66 respectively.

The Mariners continue their early season push as they attend the Sacramento City College Invitational on Friday, February 21st. The meet will be held at American River College in Sacramento.
