College of Marin Aquatics Thrives at Mariner Invitational

Mariners Swim enjoyed a much shorter journey to their latest meet. College of Marin hosted their annual Invitational Swim Meet on Friday at the Indian Valley Campus and were generally successful in each race. The eight-athlete team recorded 17 top five finishes on the day.

The meet began with the Women's 200-yard medley relay. The Mariners' quartet of Keturah Fluno, Serena Mejia, Remy Pelzman and Sasha Urban took second place with a time of 2:28.07. They finished less than 10 seconds behind the winners from Solano College.

Mejia had little time to rest as she took part in the 50-yard free just after the medley relay. She turned in an excellent time of 39.73 seconds to take fourth place. The freshman also took fifth place in the Women's 100-yard IM with a time of 1:50.06.

A quartet of Mariners took part in the Men's 50 yard free. Matheus Borges finished second with a time of 26.85 seconds, less than half second back of the winning from Solano College. Iram Hernandez finished fourth in that same race in 29.35 seconds. Sebastian Masters took sixth in 32.00 seconds, and Rosbel Santos was seventh with a time of 36.09 seconds.

Borges recorded a win in the Men's 200-yard IM with a time of 2:47.03. It was his first time entering that race during the 2020 season. He finished up his individual meet with a second-place finish in the Men's 100 yard Free. He was just over a minute with a final time of 1:01.69.

Hernandez took second in the Men's 200 yard free. He clocked in with a time of 2:45.69, besting his seed time by nearly three seconds. He also raced in the 100-yard free with a time of 1:13.77 to place fourth. Masters and Santos both raced in the 100-yard free and took fifth and sixth respectively with times of 1:14.30 and 1:29.26.

Sasha Urban turned in another excellent performance in the water with a pair of individual victories. The sophomore dominated in the 100-yard breaststroke. She finished in 1:15.07, just head of her seed time and over 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She took first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:34.20, ahead of her best finish this season.

Sophomore Keturah Fluno also had an excellent showing in her two individual races. She took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:44.89, just a few seconds out of third place. In the women's 100 yard free, Fluno bested her seed time to take seventh place with a time of 1:32.04.

Remy Pelzman also performed well in two individual events. She places second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:19.96. She did even better with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time clocked in at 1:14.48.

The team finished the day with a pair of team relays. The women took second with a time of 2:15.53 while the men also finished second in their race with a time of 2:08.50.

The Mariners have a week of training ahead before they head to the College of San Mateo Invite on Friday, March 13th.
