College of Marin Track Opens Season At College of San Mateo

The Mariners Track & Field Team began their season on Friday in San Mateo. The Athletic Mariners competed at the College of San Mateo with a full team of freshman.

Duncan Gardner had an impressive debut for the Mariners with a seventh place finish in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:35.27. He also competed in the 800 meter race and finished with a time of 2:16.47. His performances at the San Mateo meet placed him ninth on the Bay Valley Conference Performance List.

Kirk Rider made his first Mariners appearance and competed in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. He posted a time of 26.17 seconds in the 200 meter and 1:01.62 in the 400 meter race.

For the first time in a long time the Mariners boasted a team of throwers. Giulio Chiappolini, Iram Hernandez and Bryan Medina all competed in the shot put and discus competitions.

In the shot put, Chiappolini took 10th with a long throw of 10.38 meters. Medina placed 12th with 9.83 meters and Hernandez 14th with a 9.31 meter throw.  In the discus Chiappolini again placed 10th with a distance of 32.7 meters, Medina was 11th with 32.25 meters and Hernandez came with a distance of 18.48 meters.

Chiappolini and Medina's results placed them 10th and 11th respectively on the Bay Valley Conference performance list.

Next up for the Mariners is the San Francisco State Distance Carnival at Chabot College on March 30th and 31st.
