College of Marin Women’s Basketball Drops Home Contest to Laney 86-47

The COM Women's basketball team put forth a solid effort but could not keep up with the athleticism and physicality of the Laney College Eagles. Four Laney College players scored in double digits and outrebounded the Mariners 45-32.

The Mariners endured a slow start managing just five points in the first quarter as Ureka Abbushi hit an early three and Monica Vasquez a late layup as the team trailed 16-5 after one quarter.  They opened the second quarter with a quick seven points, a three pointer and layup by Jaychelle Price and another layup by Vasquez. Despite the run, Laney answered back with a 23 point quarter of their own taking a 39-18 lead into halftime.

The third quarter had a much better offensive flow for both teams, with Laney outscoring College of Marin by a 21-17 margin in the period. The fourth quarter went Laney's way again, closing out the resounding 86-47 victory. Jamika Wilson led the Eagles with 25 points and 21 rebounds.

The Mariners were led by Vasquez's 12 points and her series of highlight real layups. Price had 10 points and three rebounds, while Abbushi had eight points and four steals.

The Mariners had down the home stretch of the schedule with a home game against Yuba College on Friday, February 12th at 5:30PM.
