Mariners Handle Mendocino College on Sophomore Night 64-35

It has not been the easiest year for the College of Marin Women's Basketball Team, but on Sophomore Night, everything came a big easier.  COM grabbed their fifth win of the season with a 64-35 score over Mendocino College.  The team received contributions from all six players as everyone scored and grabbed at least four rebounds.

The Mariners jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter and did not look back. Monica Vasquez opened the scoring with a three point play. Jaychelle Price had a pair of layups and Molly Carmody hit a deep three to take a 14-5 lead at the end of one. Mendocino College rallied to start the second pulling within 5 at 18-13 before Darrian Cross had a put back layup followed by a pair of Carmody buckets to give the team a 24-16 lead at the half. Carmody led all scorers with 21 points.

College of Marin started the second half on a 10-3 run, pushing the lead to 15 at 34-19. Both teams traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter, with a 43-28 advantage for the Mariners at quarters' end. The fourth quarter saw the entire team join the fun, outscoring Mendocino 21-7. Kim Maxwell scored on a stellar step through drive and followed that with a knockdown jumper. Price was a steady force throughout, scoring in a myriad of ways with layups, floaters and three pointers throughout. The result was never in doubt as COM put up 40 points in the second half.

It was a sweet way to end a trying season that saw four sophomore play in their final home games.

Darrian Cross filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Price nearly had a triple double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, she also had four steals and three blocks. Vasquez had 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Maxwell had a career high 11 rebounds and scored five points as well.

The final game of the season is at Solano College on Friday, February 19th.
